What is Greyfriars?

Greyfriars is a Christian high school (grades 9-12) in Matthews, North Carolina. GCA is a day school with university-style class scheduled and offers students the flexibility of both full-time and part-time (homeschool) enrollment options.  Classes meet together Mondays, Wednesdays and part of Fridays. Curriculum integrates theology, history, literature, mathematics, science, aesthetics, logic, rhetoric, and language (Greek and Spanish). Each subject is taught from a decidedly biblical worldview by experienced faculty members who provide university-quality instruction. More importantly, GCA seeks to integrate these subjects as parts of the whole of creation, which is unified in Christ and in his revelation to men.

We are especially interested in giving Christian families an affordable option by which their children can continue to receive an exceptional, Christian education through the challenging high school years.

Our Vision

The Goal
Psalm 127:4-5 says that children are “like arrows in the hand of a warrior,” and “happy is the man who has his quiver full of them.” The warrior for Christ is happy to have a quiver full of arrows because he knows that arrows are meant to be shot into the world, to bring down enemies of the faith, and to advance the cause of the gospel. Sharp, straight arrows are essential to the warrior’s mission to protect and expand the dominion of his King. It is the duty of Christian parents to craft their children into such fine arrows, and this process requires skill, time, and educational excellence.

The Problem
To achieve educational excellence, many parents have chosen an alternative path of home educating. The homeschool ranks continue to grow and to report great success in academics and kingdom usefulness. But, home educating is hard work, and for many the struggle intensifies as their children transition into high school. Higher grade levels demand increased teacher specialization, time commitment, and focus. An environment with little or no peer interaction can hamper the development of rhetorical skills (the ability to present ideas and arguments forcefully and persuasively). On-line courses and co-operative groups can be utilized to overcome some of these obstacles, but the logistical challenges associated with this approach can be overwhelming, particularly for large families.

The Solution
A classical, Christian high school that bridges the gap between home school and college could be the solution to the problem faced by many families. Greyfriars Classical Academy, a classical, Christian high school in Matthews, NC, provides students with a classical education in which the grammar (fundamental facts and rules), logic (ordered relationships), and rhetoric (expression of ideas in speech and writing) of each subject is emphasized from a decidedly biblical worldview. The high school curriculum is academically rigorous and consistent with North Carolina standards and college preparatory requirements. Greyfriars offers classes in a university-style format (three days a week on campus; two days a week working at home). The Academy is overseen by a Board who has hired highly qualified staff, including a full-time headmaster.

Statement of Faith

It is mandatory that all Board members, teachers, and staff fully subscribe to the following statement of faith, either by written statement or by oral testimony before the Board:

  • We believe the Bible alone to be the word of God, the ultimate and infallible authority for faith and practice.
  • We believe that there is one God, eternally existent in three Persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • We believe that God created the heavens and the earth and all they contain, and that He upholds and governs them in accordance with his eternal will.
  • We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory.
  • We believe that, for the salvation of lost and sinful men, regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely necessary.
  • We believe that salvation is by grace through faith alone.
  • We believe that faith without works is dead.
  • We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a godly life.
  • We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost, they that are saved to the resurrection of life and they that are lost to the resurrection of damnation.
  • We believe in the spiritual unity of all believers in our Lord Jesus.
  • We believe that God defined marriage as the life-long covenant between one man and one woman, and that all forms of sexual activity outside of marriage are sin.
  • We believe that God immutably creates each person to reflect His image as male or female.
